People of any age can practice Iyengar Yoga.
An Iyengar Yoga teacher will always ensure that the students are totally involved (physically, mentally and emotionally) in their practice. Introducing yoga to children develops in them the attributes of courage, concentration and determination.
Children can be playfully introduced to yoga but they should never be forced as this can damage their spine. They should be taught the yamas and niyamas with the help of stories and anecdotes.
Iyengar Yoga teaches all the 8 aspects of astanga yoga through asanas and pranayama.
Yogacharya B.K.S.Iyengar has been teaching us how the performance of an asana needs disciplines encoded by yama and niyama, how the body needs to be guided in asana, the role of the breath (pranayama), how the complete involvement of the senses of perception (pratyahara) and total concentration (dharana and dhyana) help to attain samadhi.
Iyengar Yoga is definitely not meant for a casual practitioner. It is not tough but it is demanding.
A student is expected to be totally (physically, mentally and emotionally) involved during his/her practices.
A lay observer may feel that a person who is more flexible can perform yogasana better than a person who is stiff.
However, this is not true.
By regular practice, one can strive towards perfection in the asana where the effort to perform it becomes effortless.
One needs to be a good student before becoming a teacher.
Yoga is a subject where you are dealing with the human body and mind.
Teaching is a major responsibility and an average student needs 3 to 5 years of learning before considering teaching even beginners.
